The Battle of Mobile Bay was the largest and most decisive Naval battle of the Civil War; August 5th, 1864. USN Admiral David Farragut was informed that the Bay was mined with what were then called "Torpedoes". Farragut lashed himself to the mast of his flag ship and ordered an assault on the 31 x 24 mile bay. "Damn the torpedoes. You never know what weather the Gulf of Mexico will bring. Full speed ahead!
